Paris Saint-Germain Overcomes Marseille via Spot-Kicks to Claim French Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

Trophy celebration scene

The Parisian club has now secured the season-opening cup on fourteen separate times.

The Parisian giants needed a stoppage-time equaliser followed by a perfect penalty shootout to get past their arch-rivals in the Gulf and capture a record-extending fourth consecutive Trophee des Champions title.

The European champions seemed to be coasting towards a straightforward win in the showdown between the Ligue 1 champions and the French Cup winners after the French winger opened the net in the opening stages.

However, Marseille struck twice in the closing moments to take a shock advantage. First, Mason Greenwood converted from the penalty spot, before the defender inadvertently directed the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a breathtaking turn of fortune, Goncalo Ramos snatched a crucial leveler in the final seconds to send the match into a penalty shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Chevalier then emerged as the hero, stopping crucial kicks from Matt O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

In the shootout, Ramos, Vitinha, the full-back, and the young talent all scored successfully for PSG to seal a convincing penalty victory.

The record champions PSG, who met last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Olympique de Marseille after achieving a league and cup double, have now lifted this competition for the 12th time in the past thirteen years.
